Fandom-y question
I think the biggest thing that most people fleeing LJ are looking for on DW is an equal fandom presence, or at least a place to start looking. A place to pimp out comms that are created to try and replace the LJ ones.
Any ideas, fellow refugees?
Edit: Holy crap you all are fantastic!!! :D

All public posts tagged with "follow friday" or "followfriday" get sucked up into the magic tag feed here:
http://www.dreamwidth.org/latest?feed=followfriday
So it's a good way for people to spread the word about comms they love.
Basically, I think there's not a shortage of places to pimp; it's just that many comms haven't yet quite reached the critical mass that encourages people to jump in.Though that's starting to change as the population of DW grows ...
I'm kind of evangelical about this, but the best way of boosting comm development is for people to jump in and start posting and commenting.
/comments over her breakfast, very randomly
I'm only new here, but this is becoming my motto already. They need to print us t-shirts, or something. :D
(Thanks for the heads-up on the Follow Friday thing, though. I wasn't aware of that!)
Re: /comments over her breakfast, very randomly
And the tag feeds are marvellous (not to mention the tag cloud).

Well, they don't have mottos, but there are t-shirts ... *g*.

There's a nice selection of other tags in the cloud too: http://www.dreamwidth.org/latest
Some of the fannish comms I am part of/know of/run, though not all of them are particularly active:
Anyone who's got more, please chime in.

I'm not even going to try listing them
because I'm too lazy; the interests search is the best place to start looking. But for stuff that's not fandom-specific, I'll throw in a plug for:
ETA: Sorry if this is spamming your post,
But yeah. The irony is that DW can look so fannish that in March, people started a Giant Non-Fandom Friending Meme to try to change the impression some people were getting that DW was "yet another clubhouse for the cool fandom kids."

This is another reason that I use the interest search - I look very carefully at how long it's been since someone posted in a comm I'm thinking of subscribing to/joining. Also, a big difference in subscribers vs. joiners mean lots of people want to read and comment, but not so many want to post, so the people who do have to be gung ho about it.

I started a couple of multi-fandom comms, and when I'm on top of my game, they do really well. One (
I realized shortly after I got here that getting my LJ friends to move (or the majority of my fandom) was just not going to happen, for any number of reasons, so that's when I decided to just put my effort into making the comms I want active. It's worked out pretty well for me, I think.

ETA: Oooh, sorry to be so abrupt! I just popped in because I know this one. :D

LOL, sorry if that explanation isn't coherent, I'm in desperate need of some food at the moment. :D

Yeah, my impression is that when open beta started, a lot of people just sort of copied the names of big LJ communities over and waited for a flood of people to materialize and start posting in the comm. And when that didn't happen, they abandoned the comm.
So there are a number of comms that died out after a few introductory posts. The comms that have taken off are the ones where the mods have been really involved and put a lot of effort into promoting the comm, starting posts, getting other people involved, etc..
