What people can expect to find in your journal: My journal is a mish-mash of content, but tends to mostly skew toward popular culture and "fan" interests. While I do talk about my real life to a point, I am not what I'd call a "journaler," in that the bulk of what I post I do so because I think it would interest others. My blog is about sharing good shit, whether that be an amusing personal anecdote, some pretty pictures or useful links.

Anything else: Um, let's see. I'm currently in college (After about a 10 year hiatus, LOL), majoring in film studies with the intent to earn either a Masters or PhD, depending on how things go. When I first returned to school, I was majoring in web design; while I came to realise that wasn't what I wanted to do for a living, it nonetheless remains a major hobby. I also create icons and sundry graphics, although most of that has been posted to LJ in the past. I have a film review blog, but I've fallen down on updating it in recent months, as I became a bit overwhelmed by real life.

I'm the administrator and player in a pretty large pan-fandom RP over on LJ (And don't I wish I could move it), but I don't talk about it that often off the RP filter these days.

I'm usually very mellow and, in typical Libra fashion, am all about diplomacy over conflict. I've gotten old enough now that I give very little time and attention to internet drama—There are way too many other better things for me to spend my time focused on.

That said, I'm staunchly liberal and have no problem with (politely) telling you if I disagree with you or that you're offending me in some way. Also, I curse a lot. So, if you take issue with either of those things, you might have some issues with my content. I always welcome respectful debate, though.

Hi! I've perused these "friending memes" before, but never done a writeup for myself. So here goes nothing...

Name: Jae (not my legal name, but many people in my day-to-day life do call me that)

Fandoms: While I have been known to write fanfiction, and I do have the fannish-style mentality of getting very excited about things and throwing myself into them, organized fandom isn't a very big part of my life right now, and I'm mostly looking for non-fannish or mostly-non-fannish journals to read. On the other hand, television shows I have particularly enjoyed include: "The West Wing", "Friday Night Lights," the Dutch series "Pleidooi," as well as many others (at the moment, I am loving "The Good Wife"). I also become suddenly more fannish toward the end of each year, because I participate in the annual yuletide challenge every year without fail and pretty much immerse myself in it for a couple of weeks.

Other Interests: Too many to list! But I love language (I am particularly infatuated with the Dutch language at the moment), travel, politics, music, writing, interesting people, and good stories (i.e. books, teevee, film). A more complete list can be found on my user profile, of course.

What people can expect to find in your journal: My public entries tend to be pretty impersonal, but they range from the analytical-and-passionate (like my series on why Dutch politics is so much better than Canadian politics: start here) to the silly-and-ridiculous (like the occasional poll about fruit). Through my linkspam posts, though, I've been trying to make an effort to post more public stuff with actual substance in it. In protected entries, I write about my daily life (including my crazy travel schedule), my work (I'm a professor of linguistics), my writing (by which I mean my fiction, though I write far too rarely, these days), whatever else is on my mind (a sampling of recent examples: a detailed review of my experiences at a local music festival, a recounting of my wacky interactions with a university computer guy, an essay about my issues with games and gaming, some musing about my observations about the pronunciation of U.S. newscasters). I post five times a week or so, sometimes more, and I try to make at least a couple of those posts public.

Anything else: I'm Canadian, though I grew up mostly in the U.S. I speak English, German, and Dutch, and though my journal is mostly in English, I feel strongly about maintaining a multilingual space there, and so commenters should feel free to interact with me in any of those three languages. I tend to be a bit cautious about adding people to my access list, as I like to get to know people gradually first through exchange on our respective public entries (for the curious, my policies on such things can be found here). I really enjoy that exchange, though, and I tend to be a prolific and dedicated commenter. I love the way dreamwidth's distinction between the reading list and the access list makes it possible to get to know people gradually, and to add interesting-sounding people to your reading list all willy-nilly whenever you want without making a full-on commitment to them.

1. I maintained a very static flist of about 400 folks over on LJ. Haven't added or dropped a friend in several years. I have a lot of bleed-over: Online friends tend to become RL friends, and many of my oldest RL friends were also on LJ (and most are headed over this way).

2. My friends are really smart. No, I mean they are REALLY SMART. Many of them are heavily engaged in political and social justice causes, or are professional tech people, or professors, or chefs, or...you get the idea. They won't hesitate to call you out if you say something dumbass on my LJ (nor will I), so if you want to say something like "I'm not racist, but..." or "hurr durr, Southerners are stupid!" on my journal, be prepared for a corrective reaming.

3. I have a wicked broad spectrum of friends, and I respect them for who and what they are. So, for example, while I am a passionate atheist, I won't tolerate people insulting religious beliefs in my LJ. Lively, impassioned conversations = good. Ad hominem attacks and name calling = banned.

4. 90% of my posts are pretty fluffy. But 10% are decidedly not. Oh, and I curse a lot.

Other Interests: Reading (I'll break the 100 book mark this year), particularly 'issue' books, ie glbtq themes, mental health, etc (but I'll read pretty much anything tbh). GLBTQ issues is a passion of mine.

Science. I am a nerd. Just graduated from university and currently trying to find Dream Job within the NHS.

Jewellery making when I have the time/inclination.

Goth stuff. I'm definitely a bit of a goth.

Music. I like anything from classical to heavy metal.

Fandoms: Mainly the Japanese rock band, Buck-Tick. TOTALLY. Though, I'm beginning to get into the Dir en Grey fandom more too. I've also been involved in the general jrock/visual kei fandom, but have recently wanted to detach myself from it, seeing as I discovered I just happen to like some bands who are Japanese, but I'm not a "jrock"/visual kei fan, if you get what I'm saying.
Other Interests: Music, mainly. My music tastes are kind of strange in that I'm a complete metalhead (love the more extreme stuff, like melodeath, techmelodeath, melodic black metal, alt metal, and also symphonic metal, etc.), but also love some other stuff like Japanese rock bands (such as Buck-Tick, Luna Sea...), and even some industrial/harsh EBM (Hanzel und Gretyl, Rammstein, Psyclon Nine, Panzer AG...).

Aside from that, I'm a bit of a geek, being into computers, and HTML/CSS. I'm a bit of a newbie web designer after taking a certification course. I'm a Certified CIW Master Designer.

I'm also a gamer. CANNOT WAIT for the new Assassin's Creed. THE WAIT IS KILLING ME. KILLING, I SAY. (oh lawd, I just realized the pun-qualities of that)

I'm also extremely interested in human psychology/behavior/sociology, etc. It intrigues me like none other.
What people can expect to find in your journal: Mostly fangirling over the members of Buck-Tick and random-ass memes/other misc. crap/interests in my unlocked entries. Locked entries tend to have a bit more substance (sometimes).
Anything else: If any other Dir en Grey fans are floating around the comm, I'd be interested in talking with you! My flist is mostly made up of other Buck-Tick fans, and I'd like a little variety (even though I love my BiTches! <3333)

Just don't get me wrong! Buck-Tick isn't all I can talk about! I quite enjoy talking about my other interests just as much. <3
