Wow.

Well, I just deleted all my LJ accounts except the most recent. Even the one I started on LJ with.

I have to admit, it's kinda bittersweet to be leaving. LJ was my home on the internet for a long time. At first, it was like a nice, shiny-new apartment complex with all sorts of cool people living there. And everyone was nice to everyone else, and the landlord was cool. Now, the place is run down, nasty, and the landlord's a jerk who won't fix the leaky sink and keeps raising the rent and lets noisy obnoxious people party all night long.

It's sad. My journals there have seen me through a lot of rough times. However, all the entries are here, and safe, and I'm happy here at Dreamwidth.

How many others got rid of their journals? How'd you guys feel about it? Sad, indifferent, happy to give LJ the virtual finger?

I've started to delete my account post for post. It hurts like hell, but I can't just delete it at once. I have to get used to saying good-bye. :(

Is there a way to mass change the security level of all existing posts at LJ? Or all least disable all comments? I want to keep my account only because I have several friends who I still want to read, despite my overall desire to just cut away from LJ completely. *shrug*

I still have a bit left on my paid sub, over on lj, and can't remember whether this is a feature of that, or not, but, yes – there is a way you can mass change the security of all existing lj posts. Go to manage entries and you should have a place, up the top, that says mass security tool. There you can make things private, or friends-locked, or whatever.

I'm entirely in the dark about disabling comments, though; it sounds like a plausible kind of thing, doesn't it? Heh.

Sorry to be a total twat if that's a paid feature, though, and you don't have it. :|

That is an extremely appropriate analogy. o.o

I only have one LJ, and I haven't deleted it quite yet. I'm trying to convince some of my friends list to join me here for a few more days before I take that plunge. I'm also trying to decide whether I should import my old entries (probably) or just leave them there. I intend to delete it eventually though, because who knows what Facebook is going to do with our information...

My entries are still there, sort of looking at me mournfully. I feel like I've kicked a puppy. On the other hand, I also feel like I've made the right choice, coming here: the bad landlord, as you say, really doesn't need my rent anymore!

Locking my lj entries down to 'private', though, is probably all I've be capable of... at least for the moment. I'm too much of a scardy-cat, ugh.

I imported three journals to this one, and one journal dated back to 2007. I'm very impressed with the import feature and that I can keep all my memories. ^_^ I then deleted my journals. :D It feel kind of sad, but good.

I'm waiting until a few more people from my flist get incensed enough to make the move. Until then, I'm just crossposting from DW with LJ comments disabled.

I'm paid through til March at which time I'm likely going to delete and purge my journal.

I still haven't deleted my LJ or updated this DW one for that matter, but I will for sure during tomorrow. I won't lie, it's hard, but I'm doing it anyway.

One thing I don't understand is how people can not react to this. They just don't care. All of my flist for example :\ Which, btw, isn't big but still. So now I'm completely without friends here. It's okay, I like making new ones, but their couldn't-care-less attitude is slightly annoying.

I'm paid up through April. I don't know what I'll do with my journal once it is no longer a paid user account. Right now I am keeping it locked down completely and only using it for reading my friends' and communities' updates. I'm hoping I can work with a few of the communities over there to start sister communities over here or something. And I am also hoping that I can convince more of my friends to move over here.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many communities were are allowed to create under one user account?

The LJ news post has reached 10,000 comments, so people are now being made to comment here: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_releases/61333.html

I think they're having business meetings and deciding on a united front. ^^; Since after all this problem concerns mostly the English-speaking half of LJ, not the Russian half.

I stopped journaling on LJ after the DrivingRevenue linkjacking fiasco earlier this year. I still have one account over there, but I deleted all content except for one friendslocked post so that those people know to find me at DW. Most of my friendslist over there weren't fazed by the linkjacking and they're not fazed by this latest thing, so I don't think anything will get them to move. A few trickle over after each LJ fail. Some stay, some drift back to LJ.

I probably won't delete my journal there until everything I would go over there for (however seldom now) is gone. But I find myself going over there less and less.

I feel resentful of LJ for doing things that made me feel uncomfortable being there. It was nice when everyone was all in one place, and I miss that aspect of it. That said, I have committed to this being my main place now, and I've met some awesome people since I made that decision and started being more active here. I don't regret that at all.

[personal profile] howlingforever 2010-09-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I deleted mine a few days ago. I'd had it for 9 years. It made me a bit sad, not that it was gone, just that I miss how much I used to like it. LJ was like my internet home for a really long time, but more recently I didn't feel welcome at all anymore and pretty much stopped being social there.

I suppose it's good to start over, anyway. I just wish I wasn't so shy here now - the last couple years on LJ sort of conditioned me to hide and feel uncomfortable and embarrassed of myself, pathetic as that sounds. :/

Haven't deleted anything yet. I just paid for a full year for my main account like...a month ago. Still waiting to see how things develop, but seriously considering deleting some of my journals over at LJ completely.

Though above the paid account time, one reason I haven't deleted my main account at LJ yet is the communities. Seriously, not a single community I'm subscribed to seems to care or even mention what's going on. Does no one read the news at LJ? Or am I just mistaken in how many people actually care?

I haven't gotten rid of my journal. It's still relatively a new journal, mainly for fandom stuffs, and my email isn't attached to any FB account. But I do have other journals I've kept in the past, mostly all friends-only or private. There is one that I had for many years that, as much as I'm tempted to deleted it to protect myself, I simply can't get myself to do it. I used that journal to write some extremely personal things that not even RL people closest to me know about. I've used it as a therapeutic journal to write down my thoughts during my depression, to understand why things happened the way they did my life, and I would go back and see how far along I've come. That's really personal business that I don't want to end up on FB. I originally came to LJ because I had full control over how hidden I could make my journal entries, and how I could freely express myself. But now I no longer feel that safety. I'm trusting this site more and more.

The biggest letdown of all this is how communities aren't being transferred, or at least mirrored, on here. There are a number of communities that I love on LJ, such as tamingthemuse or mission_insane, mainly the prompt writing communities. If there's anything that's going to keep people glued to LJ, it's the communities.

The only reason why I'm not going to delete my LJ accounts is because my fav communities are still there.
I would be really happy if they import everything here.
I wouldn't even mind to create mirror comms myself, but I don't like to be on the way if comms mods decide to move.
I decided to post here all my music and dramas/movies related stuff and delete those entries there on LJ.
I also hope more ppl from my f-list will move here >>

I'm not happy about it at all. I started on Livejournal in 2001, so it's a nearly a decade of history for me. It's hard to leave that behind. Most of the people on my f-list I care about do have accounts here, so I'm hoping they will follow, but there are a few who don't want to come to DW--and then there are the communities. It's sad.

I haven't gotten rid of my LJ account, mostly because there are a few people there who won't switch who I'd still like to read, but also because there are a lot of file-sharing and sales communities I'm still active in, at LJ. I was sad to turn off comments there, though - I don't know who I'll be missing for a couple of weeks yet - it depends on who takes the time to login with OpenID and comment here at DW. I just can't risk the privacy breaches, though.

Also, I like your Sailor Moon icon!

I'm still in the process of editing all my tags in my fic journal - I naturally kept a totally different tags organisation, and god, it is painful. But also sort of freeing; I feel lighter the farther I get, and safer. It's awesome knowing that it's all soon going to be in one, safe place.

I haven't deleted my account but I did inform my f-list that I will be removing the more personal entries there and I will mostly be posting here. I told them that I will be keeping the account so I can stay in touch. So far only one expressed interest to open an account here in order to comment on entries. I think some of them don't have an issue with it or probably feel differently about this change. /sigh

Your analogy is very appropriate. Just when I've become comfortable with LJ, that happened :/
