Communities

One of the things people often use as an excuse not to come over to dreamwidth is the lack of communities. I'm compiling a list of fandom challenge comms and other interesting comms, if anyone can help me flesh out this list with your own comm/comm you know of, that would be awesome!

Plus you might find something you are interested in there!

The List

You might want to check out http://three-weeks-for-dw.dreamwidth.org/ for more information, too. It's a little meme where people have fests and friendings and make posts that they only post to DW until three weeks have passed, so DW has exclusive content in that time.

sharpiefan: DW: To boldly go, hoping that the rest of fandom will follow (DW to boldly go)

[community profile] community_promo is a good place to look for comms. Also, for the Age of Sail people:

The Age of Sail newsletter:
[community profile] despatches This is produced once a week with a round-up of all the recent news from the wider Age of Sail fandom, in the style and feel of the LJ original, but with a strong focus on things posted on Dreamwidth.

General Age of Sail:
[community profile] age_of_sail: Age of Sail fandoms are seafaring fandoms of the 18th-19th centuries, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander, Hornblower, and the like. We also enjoy other military and civilian fandoms in the same period, especially the Napoleonic Wars and Regency (Jane Austen, Sharpe, Georgette Heyer, etc.), speculative fiction set during this period (Temeraire, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell), and historical real person fandom of the same period (Wellington, Nelson, etc.)
[community profile] anything_aos: This is a community for all fans of the Age of Sail. Whether you're a fan of Hornblower, Sharpe, Master and Commander, POTC, Jane Austen or anything else to do with the Age of Sail, you'll find something here. It's a place for history, stories, icons, fanvids, rec, requests or anything. It must have some link to the Age of Sail. That's the only catch.

Things on Land:
[community profile] aninfamousarmy: This community is for fiction, art and discussion relating to the British Army, its allies and enemies during the military career of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, with a strong - but by no means exclusive - emphasis on the characters featured in Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' novels.
[community profile] napoleonic_era: This community is for posting anything factual relating to the Napoleonic Era, for example articles, excerpts from books, letters, diaries and memoirs of the time, as well as links to internet resources, non-fiction book reviews, paintings, caricatures, etc.
[community profile] rambling_soldier: This is a community for fans of Bernard Cornwell's "Sharpe" series to get together and discuss, write fic, make art or vids relating to the characters featured in the Sharpe novels and the accompanying Carlton TV series. Anything relating to the British Army, its allies and enemies during the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, historical fact or fiction, is more than welcome also.

Things at Sea:
[community profile] mandc_read: The Patrick O'Brian Readthrough of the World! Starting with Master and Commander on 7th January 2008, we will be reading through Patrick O'Brian's Aubreyad books, one chapter a week, and discussing them here.
[community profile] mandc_watch: We're going to watch Master and Commander together, all at the same time, all from within our own time zones. And at the same time, we are going to squee. We are the United Nations of Patrick O'Brian Love on Dreamwidth: UNOPOBL-DW.
[community profile] mandc_library: The purpose of this journal is to act as a library for Aubrey-Maturin fanfiction, to bring everything together and to arrange it by book, so that no one who is halfway though the series should encounter spoilers from the wrong books.
[community profile] for_all_love: Master and Commander fanfiction
[community profile] where_away: Got a memorable quote from one of the Aubrey-Maturin books? Want to share and discuss it with others? Post it in here!
[community profile] hm_jollies: The community is for the sharing of information and sources about HM Corps of Marines. It was created as a collection point for such information after a challenge was given to two of us to write a paper (or a book!) about the Marines from the American Revolution to the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

Regency England:
[profile] georgette_hayer: A community for all fans of Georgette Heyer and her books.
[community profile] janeausten: This community is for fans of Jane Austen on Dreamwidth.
[community profile] regency_romance: This community is for chatter about Regency romance novels. Authors include the queen of Regency romances, Georgette Heyer, as well as other authors.

[community profile] fandom_on_dw, [site community profile] dw_community_promo, [community profile] fandomcalendar, and [community profile] bigbangindex are a good place to look for fannish communities and challenges.

[community profile] fan_flashworks and [community profile] kink_bingo are multifandom communities that run year round.

Some annual yuletide-like exchanges are organized on DW. [community profile] dark_agenda runs kaleidoscope alongside yuletide every year, for fandoms with chromatic characters or creators. [community profile] not_primetime is for mid-sized fandoms that are ineligible for yuletide. [community profile] 3_ships is for OT3s. [community profile] junetide is for original fiction.

[community profile] hs_olympics is an annual Homestuck team challenge that's starting sign-ups next week.

...funny, it seems like the kind of communities I see here are always fanfic stuff, and I keep looking for ANYTHING ELSE...!

Ah, cool! Thanks! Also, I think [community profile] add_a_writer is a carryover from LJ. And [community profile] runners is a fairly active/pretty cool community for folks who like to run.

...I find I've been disappointed to join fun-sounding diverse communities and then see no action there at all for a year and more, even if I prod and poke a bit: maybe it is time to do that more again, like gardening...!

The thing that disappoints me more than anything else is the lack of like-minded individuals, and I don't think I'm that unusual.

[community profile] capslock_bleach (Bleach fandom shenanigans), [community profile] dgray_man (general D. Gray-Man fandom com) and [community profile] kinkfest (Spring Kink- multifandom fic fest) all have mirror sites on DW now.

(Mods of said comms, I hope you don't mind me mentioning you!)

[community profile] harrypotter hosts the Masterlist of HP Communities on Dreamwidth, which is part of the part of the Masterlist of Masterlists of Communities on Dreamwidth network.

You might find a link to the Masterlist of Masterlists a useful addition to your post. :)
