LJ sent me an email

Is your Friends page feeling a little empty? Do you have friends who haven't posted in a while you'd like to hear from again? Invite them back, and you can both get some free Paid account time as a bonus!

Our new Remember LiveJournal promotion lets active members like you send their long lost LiveJournal friends an invitation to return. If they accept, both you and your friend will receive a free month of Paid account time! You can earn 1 month of free Paid account time for up to 5 people who Remember LiveJournal, for a total of 5 months of free Paid account time. After that, you can still keep inviting friends, and they'll still get their free month of Paid account time. A special gift will be given to the person who has the most friends Remember LiveJournal, we'll be giving them a permanent paid account!

To start inviting old friends go to http://www.livejournal.com/remember/ while logged in to your LiveJournal account, and enter your friend's username. We'll send them an email with a confirmation code (or you can copy/paste the link and send it to them directly). Once they accept, they just need to post an entry for you both to receive your free month of Paid account time!

Head on over to http://www.livejournal.com/remember/ to help your friends Remember LiveJournal!

Sincerely,
The LiveJournal Team.

Looks like the policy changes, lousy "make it work like Facebook!" code, and total lack of control of spam accounts has driven away so much of their userbase that they're willing to hand out hundreds (thousands?) of months of paid time to entice people back.

I'd consider taking them up on it, just for the ability to make a few rss feeds of DW and tumblr accounts, which only paid accounts can do. (Or could. I don't know if that's changed; it's been a long time since I looked at it.)

LOL, I got the same email this morning. All I could think was that it's either a poor attempt at an April Fool's thing or they are seriously losing users. Most of the places I visit online rank LJ in the same sphere as Geocities and Myspace. "Oh, right, I used to go there, they still exist?" seems to be the general attitude.

Someone who saw me post my link on LJ said "there's lots of hot russian chicks on LJ!"

Russian side of things might be doing okay. Or they may be selling mail order brides.

Either way, I suggested my formerly LJ using friends should at least make a "Eff LJ, you can find me at [fill-in-the-blank] these days if you care" post, and I get free time out of it. Time I probably will make no real use of, but I also made sure to point out "if you liked LJ and want something like it, DW is way better"

Nope, nothing in the spam folder except the usual crop of anatomical enhancement scams.

Maybe I'm not on the list because there was an opt-out option so many years ago that I've forgotten I used it? Not that it really matters. Like LiveJournal these days...

Update: I got it today. And the announcement went up in the news community too. Oh joy, LJ hasn't forgotten me.

On top of all of that, "customer service" is one of the worst of any company I've ever done business with. I complained repeatedly about their promotion of child murder (the Planned Parenthood promo of a few years ago). I requested equal time be given to a pro-life group. After ignoring me, giving me the runaround and all the rest, they finally told me basically, "If you don't like it, leave."

Which is how I ended up here. (I feel bad that I did given them a few dollars this year so I could use some of my icons. A moment of weakness!)

Unfortunately, this place is even MORE dead. I've been here 2 or 3 years and I'm mostly talking to myself day after day. Not even fandom things like the Doctor Who premiere get any activity!

I'm at a loss.

Much of fandom has moved to tumblr, which is not so much a discussion forum as a tangle of roller-coasters where you scream at people rushing past in the other cars. It's always lively but rarely coherent.

That's a good description. When I go there, I do love the pictures. But I never can figure out a way to interact, so it's a bit pointless to me. I thought interaction was the point of the internet! Silly me.

PP murders children. That's their main purpose. And of course there are crisis pregnancy centers who offer all that sort of care. It's false to say otherwise.

If LJ wants to support that, that's bad enough. They could have chosen to support any number of other types of charities during that time - things that would've been way less controversial. But if they are going to promote child murder, the least they could do is offer equal time to the other side. They refused.

From all I hear, blogging is dying out in general. Attention spans are getting to toddler-levels. (I see this happening even to me!) No one wants to do more than write a few words. The rest is just scrolling through images and maybe hitting "like/thumbs up" once in a while. Discussion? What's that.

Oh, well. I guess it was nice while it lasted.

Supporting PP is one of the things I actually do like about LJ--good on them!

PP saves many women's lives--and forcing women to carry unwanted fetuses is a very violent act that crisis pregnancy centers support. Enjoy your preference of the unborn over the lives of living women!

Over and out.

[personal profile] veritas_poet 2015-04-01 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
PP saves many women's lives

Nonsense. Women DIE all the time from this horrible procedure.

And what about the female babies whose lives are snuffed out by this barbaric procedure? You know, the ones who don't get the chance to grow up to become women?

--and forcing women to carry unwanted fetuses is a very violent act that crisis pregnancy centers support.

How vile.

No one "forces" a woman to carry a baby and give them life. It's a privilege.

Enjoy your preference of the unborn over the lives of living women!

It's horrifying to see a grown person apparently ignorant of grade school biology. What do you think an unborn child IS? Until people like you murder them, they are ALIVE. And since human mother + human father can only produce human offspring, that's a human being that's just as much alive as "living women".

The ignorance of your comment is second only to the evil of your support for slaughtering infants.

PP murders infants. That's what it does, and that is what you so proudly support.

How vile it is to see people so brazenly proclaiming their support for slaughtering children.

At least you are honest about it.

PP murders children. That's their main purpose.

No, honey, no. That is not what their main purpose is. Family *planning* is their main purpose, be it through legal abortions- which is *not* murdering a child since it's technically a zygote or a fetus and not born yet, whereas a child is one that has been born and lives on it's own, so to speak, outside the mother's womb, birth control, other women's health necessities, etc.

They do good things. And I'm sorry that you cannot see that.

From all I hear, blogging is dying out in general. Attention spans are getting to toddler-levels. (I see this happening even to me!) No one wants to do more than write a few words. The rest is just scrolling through images and maybe hitting "like/thumbs up" once in a while. Discussion? What's that.

I would have to agree with this. If it can't be said in a vague Facebook post or in 140 chars, then people don't seem to care.

No, honey, no.

First of all, I an not your "honey". Please do not speak to me in that condescending manner, as though I am 12 years old. Thank you.

Second, you're actually going to sit there and deny that Planned Parenthood ends pregnancies? I guess they are lying on their own website?

"Abortion is a safe and legal way to end pregnancy" (Quoting from their own official website as shown below.)

And "safe" is a lie anyway. Abortion is not safe for 1) the child, as the child is murdered and 2) the woman, as she will suffer for the rest of her life knowing she murdered her own child. And that's in addition to the physical risks.

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/abortion

There is straight up evidence from their own site, but you are going to deny it?

They do good things. And I'm sorry that you cannot see that.

Murdering infants is not a good thing. I was going to say, "I'm sorry you cannot see that." But you can see that. You know it.

You know Planned Parenthood murders infants. And you boldly support it. It's horrifying to witness. You'd think I'd be used to it by now.

There is no scientific report that will ever back up your claims that a zygote/fetus is a "child". None whatsoever.

Abortion does *not* "murder a child". You cannot murder something that would not exist outside the womb, You cannot "murder" a zygote or fetus anyway, that is a law term and would not apply.

Yes PP terminates pregnancies- no one is denying that. They do so at the behest of the *woman*. And yet, I don't see you labeling your fellow women as murderers.

Abortions, however, are *not* their primary goal and they are by far the least of what they do- I read somewhere a few years back that abortions are actually maybe 1% of what they actually do.

Care for women, children- *real children meaning they have been born and do not require their mother's *body* to sustain them, and pregnancies that the women *do* want via prenatal care and mothering classes are their primary goals. Providing ways to prevent pregnancies from occuring via birth control/contraceptives and classes is another.

Unfortunately, nothing I or anyone else says will change your mind or cause you stop spewing vitriol about an organization you fail to understand and refuse to do proper research about.

I'm sorry that you are so blinded and misguided in your beliefs otherwise. I pity you, truly I do.

There is no scientific report that will ever back up your claims that a zygote/fetus is a "child". None whatsoever.

Why do you need a report? It's basic biology.

If a human zygote/fetus is not a child, what is it? You know you have no answer for that. None. Zero.

It's a human being. A child. And no one has the right to murder that child, just like no one has the right to murder you.

Thank you for putting your support for child murder on the internet for the world to see! The world NEEDS to see it.

This is what sane and decent people are up against in today's increasingly insane society.

I'm seconding [personal profile] elf; I have friends here though things are slower and I don't have to click back three pages to read all the latest updates from my friends. And yes, some fannish things are quiet - but I much prefer the atmosphere here.

Fandom seems to have jumped to different platforms since LJ took its header, but DW is the only one where I feel comfortable with the format and all.

I don't know if you know about it, but every January, there's a collection of challenges at [community profile] snowflake_challenge that numerous people across fandom take part in, and go to prove that DW really isn't as dead as it might look.

I logged into my old Gmail account that I used for LJ, but I haven't gotten this -- just a bunch of messages from Planned Parenthood about how I match some of their volunteer positions thanks to my signing up to volunteer for them a few years back (although I wound up not having the time. I should remedy that in the near future...)

The promotion still seems to be available if I go to their /remember page, though. Not that I'd have any use for paid time at that graveyard.

I have a permanent account, so I just canned it.

If that were true, I'd lilkely get one, lol. A good two-thirds or more of my friends no longer post there, it's either Facebook, Twitter or sporadicly, here, or not at all.

The fact it's not going to Russian users says to me that their US side is floundering and yeah, I agree, this is a desperation move on their part.

I take it back! A LJ Notes email just came in and *gasp!* it's about this! (And actually, two emails down, an email exactly like you describe getting.)

LOL.

Yeah, I had a paid account for much of my time there, but then all the changes, the bannings, etc and I let it lapse. Then I simply stopped posting there and stuck with IJ, and when DW came along, I crosspost between those two now.}:P

Jan 2008, not long after Strikethrough happened was the last time I used it for more than reading the few friends/authors still there.

I finally got the email, too. I thought at first maybe it was an April Fool's thing, but no, it appears to be legit. My LJ account is a permanent account, so I just ignored the email. I'd been on LJ ever since Brad was at the helm of things, and with each sale things got progressively worse and worse. Things were okay under Six Apart, since Brad was still around; but once Six Apart sold LJ to SUP, that's when I knew things were going to go downhill fast, and boy, was I right.

Yeah, I was rather underwhelmed when I read that email. I don't have the slightest inclination to go and bother my friends. I'm hardly on LJ myself anymore... just crossposting, and sometimes using one single lonely community that doesn't really exist here on DW.

Meh. They can keep their free paid time.
